Department Reps listen to concerns from your Course Reps and raise any issues that are wider-spread in higher level meetings, to ensure staff can change things that affect as many students as possible. They work for us, your Students' Union, so we make sure they know everything they need to know to support you every year.
Become a Department Rep
We're hiring! Applications for next year's team of Department Reps is now open.
We are Hallam Students' Union: we champion students' rights and work to enhance the student experience at Hallam. We're looking for engaging and enthusiastic students to join our team as representatives for each of Hallam's departments (soon to be called Schools and Institutes).
Purpose of the job:
We're looking for a student who has experience of doing well in a role that requires proactive communication with others, experience of working with students or student groups, and who can work flexibly and independently alongside their studies. Full training is provided to any successful candidates. This role involves working closely to support the Course Reps within your Department to ensure they can escalate feedback and be supported to resolve issues. The role includes gathering feedback, attending key meetings, building relationships with staff and Course Reps, and asking challenging questions where necessary to ensure the best changes are made for students. Your work will result in students in the Department feeling more strongly that their feedback is taken on board and acted upon, and you will help other Reps feel a part of a community with a common purpose to improve quality for students.
To act as a key Student Representative within your Department of study, liaising with students and other Representatives to gain a genuinely representative understanding of issues relating to the academic experience within your Department, and using this feedback to enhance the student experience within your Department.

What do Department Reps do?
Department Reps are key to making sure the voices of all students are heard at a higher level, beyond your course specifically. We know that sometimes problems come up for students that are more widely spread, and we want to make sure that your opinions are heard, and changes are made, no matter what the concern is. Department Reps help with this and are paid students dedicated to provide this support.
How do you become a Department Rep?
Department Reps are recruited each year, and are appointed by the College Officers, Representation team, and where possible a panelist from your Department, usually a Student Experience Lead.
Are you interested in other activities?
We are a democratic organisation that empowers you to fight for change on campus and seek support from elected representatives who have got your back. You can find out more about other ways to get involved in campaigning, elections, policy, who your Officers are, and more via Union Council.
